Products for Drug Development
Glaucoma is generally caused by elevated intraocular pressure, which leads to damage to the optic nerve and retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and ultimately to visual field dysfunction. However, elevated IOP is only one of the risk factors for glaucoma. In addition to this, a number of factors can contribute to the progression of glaucoma. Oxidative stress and neuroinflammation have also been implicated in the pathogenesis of glaucoma. Therefore, the use of some natural products with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties may represent an alternative approach to glaucoma treatment.
Ace Therapeutics provides researchers around the world with a wide range of natural products for glaucoma research, for exploring their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic mechanisms on RGCs in order to develop more efficient, well-established anti-glaucoma drugs.
Potential of Natural Products for Glaucoma Treatment
Several in vivo or in vitro studies have shown that certain natural products show properties that prevent the loss of RGCs and therefore may be effective in the treatment of glaucoma. For example, baicalin, marijuana and hesperidin may lower IOP. Ginkgo, wolfberry, curcumin, and caffeine have shown neuroprotective effects on RGCs through a variety of mechanisms. These active substances may serve as alternative targets for glaucoma treatment in addition to IOP-lowering drugs.
We target this area of drug development research to provide easily accessible and cost-effective anti-glaucoma phytochemicals.
